About the 718 Boxster
The Boxster arrived in 1996 when Porsche was in genuine financial trouble, and it worked because it was not a compromise. The mid-engined layout that makes the Cayman so balanced is identical here — the Boxster came first, and the Cayman is the coupe version, not the other way round.
The fabric roof folds in nine seconds and operates at up to 50 km/h, and because the engine is behind the cabin rather than in front of it, the luggage compartments at both ends are untouched by the roof mechanism. You can pack for a weekend and still drive roof-down.
With 300 PS from the turbocharged flat-four and a kerb weight well under 1,400 kg, it is quick without being intimidating, and the open cabin makes moderate speeds feel like more. For an evening run along the coast or up to Genting, few cars are better suited.
