About the i5
The i5 is not a separate electric model line but the eighth-generation 5 Series with a battery where the fuel tank and engine used to be. That matters: the cabin, the boot and the seating position are those of a conventional executive sedan rather than a compromise shaped around a skateboard platform.
The eDrive40 uses a single rear-mounted motor producing 340 PS and 430 Nm, drawing on an 81.2 kWh usable battery for a WLTP range of roughly 500 to 580 kilometres depending on wheels and specification. It accepts up to 205 kW of DC charging, which is a ten-to-eighty per cent stop of around half an hour.
Rear-wheel drive and near-perfect weight distribution make it more engaging than its remit demands, and with no engine the dominant sound at highway speed is tyre roar — which BMW has spent considerable effort suppressing.
Turbo delivers the i5 across Greater Kuala Lumpur. Charging arrangements are confirmed at handover.
