About the i8
The i8 is one of the more unusual cars of the last decade. Its passenger cell is carbon fibre reinforced plastic bonded to an aluminium chassis, the doors open upward in butterfly fashion, and the powertrain pairs a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo driving the rear wheels with an electric motor driving the fronts.
Combined output is 374 PS, which is modest for a car that looks like this, but the i8 was never about outright pace — it was BMW demonstrating that a sports car could be built around carbon fibre and electrification years before anyone else committed to either.
Its shape has aged remarkably well, with the floating C-pillars and layered surfacing still looking like nothing else on the road. As a rental it draws more attention than cars with three times its power.
