About the AMG C 63 S
The W205 C 63 S is the final C-Class AMG with a V8, and that alone has made it significant. Its 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine places both turbochargers inside the cylinder banks — the hot-inside-V layout — which shortens the gas paths and improves response. Each one is hand-assembled by a single technician.
Output in S form is 510 PS and 700 Nm, driving the rear wheels only, through an AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed that uses a wet clutch instead of a torque converter. There is an electronically controlled limited-slip differential and a nine-stage traction control system adjustable independently of the stability control.
It is a deliberately old-fashioned car in its behaviour: rear-drive, enormously torquey, and audibly a V8 at every opportunity. AMG replaced it with a four-cylinder hybrid, which is why demand for these has held so firmly.
