About the AMG G 63
The G-Class began as a military vehicle commissioned by the Shah of Iran and has been in continuous production since 1979. The current car was comprehensively re-engineered in 2018 — independent front suspension, a wider body, a modern cabin — but Mercedes deliberately retained the exposed door hinges, the bonnet-top indicators and the door latch that closes with a rifle-bolt clack.
The G 63 fits AMG's 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 585 PS and 850 Nm, with side-exit exhausts that make the car audible from a considerable distance. It reaches 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds despite a shape with the aerodynamics of a filing cabinet.
Underneath, all three differentials — front, centre and rear — lock independently, and there is a low-range transfer case. Very few owners will use any of it, but it is genuinely there.
